Last year, Vacheron Constantin made history by producing the most complicated watch in the world: the 57260. The 57260 is a pocket watch with 57 complications, and it took three master watchmakers from its famed Atelier Cabinotiers eight years to complete present this timepiece to mark the company’s 260th anniversary. This year, they have produced yet another remarkable, albeit less complicated, timepiece to wow the crowd once again. Presenting to you, the new Maître Cabinotier Retrograde Armillary Tourbillon.
The Maître Cabinotier Retrograde Armillary Tourbillon is a follow-up of the 57260, by the same three master watchmakers who brought us the most complicated watch in the world. Notably, the new timepiece features two complications from the 57260: the armillary tourbillon and the double retrograde indication.
The watch is powered by Vacheron Constantin’s Caliber 1990. This is a manual-winding movement, which boasts a power reserve of around 65 hours. As mentioned, the watch features two main complications – the armillary tourbillon which is fitted on two-axis, as well as a double retrograde display with indicates both the minutes and the hours. It is electro-plated with an NAC treatment, and its dark anthracite colour gives it a mirror-polished effect. The finishing, needless to say, is exceptional too.
On the subject of the tourbillon, the one that is fitted on this timepiece is a tad special. In fact, the armillary tourbillon got its name from the armillary sphere, in which it is similar to the one that was incorporated in an astronomical clock that was made by Antide Janvier. It is incorporated with a spherical balance spring, which ensures the concentric development of the spring and consequently the isochronism of the balance wheel. Interestingly, the carriage forms the company’s Maltese Cross emblem when it intersects once every fifteen seconds when the twin-axis rotates.
On top of that, the watch is fitted with a new type of escapement. This escapement is developed by Vacheron Constantin, with its escape wheel and lever in silicon and diamond pallet stones to improve its durability. Notably, the whole mechanism is very light, and its performance exceeds the requirements of the Swiss Official Chronometer Testing Institute (COSC).
The 45.7mm piece unique watch is cased in 18K white gold, and it is fitted with a satin-finished silver coloured dial. It is also awarded the Poinçon de Genève hallmark, which is a testament to the excellence and quality of this timepiece. Finally, the Vacheron Constantin Maître Cabinotier Retrograde Armillary Tourbillon is fitted with a Black Mississippiensis alligator strap, fastened with a complementary white gold triple-blade folding clasp.
